Cleaning Drains is Disgusting
My two teenage daughters and wife have long beautiful hair that regularly cause our sinks and tubs draining slowly. Now I love their hair but I must say that cleaning it from behind the stoppers is disgusting.
I have found a nifty and inexpensive tool that can make this job a breeze. I found it at Lowe’s and its called the Cobra Plastic Drain Stick ($2.48). (It’s on Amazon as well for a little more money.) This is another one of my favorite products!How to use the drain stick? The method reminds me of my son’s old Beyblade toy tops. Slide it down the drain (removing the stopper is optional). Give it a slow, steady and strong pull. Watch what comes out and it dislodges nasty build-up and snags hair. A few swipes will be necessary. NOTE: The plastic barbed teeth will likely snag on the stopper and drain components and a strong pull should dislodge but this. Since the debris down the drain and clean-up. Job complete!
If you need to take drain cleaning further a Sterilite or Rubbermaid tub is a great way to open p-traps below the sink. Cheap – less than $5! They will collect any dirty water and catch parts before they tumble away. Clear out the items stored below the sink, check carefully for any signs of leaks with the supply lines or drain pipes, and slide the tub below the p-trap. Open things up (remember – righty-tight, lefty-loosey) and clear any contents. I use an old toothbrush for this. This could be the nastiest thing you have ever seen – this is not for those of weak disposition!
