I remember my parents getting our first microwave. One of the coolest features was setting the mug of cold water in the compartment and two minutes later pulling it out boiling hot and ready for a tea bag. In those days the “microwave culture” was born in my family, and that was about as far as it got. However, the instant craze continued for others as the advent of instant hot water dispensers arrived. Soap dispensers were displaced as these little handle-spigot devices were installed next to faucets. They had their own heater below the countertop and provided tea-in-seconds. A cool idea, right?
Nowadays I say the same thing again and again when I come across these units. It’s not if they leak or give you problems, its when they start leaking. And when they leak you usually won’t know about it til its too late! What follows is damage to the cabinet base, kitchen flooring and possibly the finishes of the floor below. A few weeks ago I came across another and sure enough it was leaking. My advice at that inspection, get rid of it and don’t replace it.
MY ADVICE TO YOU: If you are thinking about installing one, think twice about the idea. If you have one, watch it closely, clear the cabinet of storage so you can clearly see water issues, set a plastic tub or bucket below to catch leaks and watch it closely.
