• Checking out the “behinds”

This is a home maintenance article so let me clarify that I’m referencing behinds in your house 🙂. There are a few behinds for you to check out as a home owner where issues can be addressed before they become major problems.

Behind #1 – Furnace in the garage. In many homes this will be a favorite place for little furry neighbors (rodents) to find access into your crawlspace. Ensure this area looks to be clear of debris and sealed up. Its a tight area and difficult to see.

Behind #2 – Hot water tank. Not only should you look behind the tank but look on top where the inlet and outlet piping is located. Are there any signs of moisture like stains, rust, puddles or damaged drywall? This can be indicative of a leak and potential issues with your hot water tank. Replacement is not always necessary but can be a possible need if not repaired.

Behind #3 – Dryer in laundry room. This is going to be a stretch and strain, but you’ll find that missing sock and bottle of Oxyclean, and probably enough loose change to buy a coffee. More importantly you can confirm that the dryer ductwork is in good condition and not crimped. Ductwork that is straight with minimal bends, and not crushed like in this picture, will dry clothes faster and reduce the build up of future lint inside the piping.

Behind #4 – Refrigerator. This is going to be tough because these areas tend to be kitchen crime scenes with their spills, stains and giant dust bunnies. Look at the floor and the ice maker hook up. Are there any signs of moisture here? If so, get to this as soon as you can.

Behind #5 – Sink cabinets in the bathrooms and kitchen. Storage piles up and visibility is limited. Regularly pull back the items and look at the drain piping, cabinet flooring and any signs of issues here. Sink filters and instant hot water dispensers can be frequent source of leaks in kitchen cabinets.
