Cooling weather is very inviting for outdoor rodents looking for a safe, comfortable place where they can move to the top of the food chain. After summer play, yard work and house maintenance it is advisable to check the condition of your crawlspace access. It may have been bumped ajar or finally reached the end of its life.
Ensure the cover is securely in place. I usually recommend that a double cover be installed, one filling the foundation access and and a second top cover to shield rain water from entering the well.
Don’t forget the “rule of thumb and pinky”… a rat can fit through a hole the size of your thumb and a mouse through a hole the size of your pinky finger. And if you choose to set preventative rodent traps, be sure these are secured near the entry so you do not have it walk off so that you have to pursue a dead rodent deep in the crawlspace.
