In an ongoing effort to improve the air we breath I offer three cost options for improving the air we breath:
#1 – Install an air scrubber. This must be installed by a licensed HVAC company like CM Heating in Everett – they were the ones to first introduce me to this. The cost at the time was about $800. You can find information about these little devices online and they seem to be very effective in improving air quality. We are more and more sensitive to the preservatives and artificial ingredients we eat, it makes sense to include air quality in that category. Electronic filters are a thing of the past and no longer installed with furnaces. These electronic units are taking their place. In watching YouTube videos they remind me of catalytic converters on cars, they pull air through honey-comb grid and zap pollutants with a UV light.
#2 – Purchase an air purifier. These can be found at Costco from $120 to $380. While they take up space and occupy an outlet receptacle to operate, they are a good option for homes without a central heating system or in the room where you spend so much time unaware of what you’re breathing – your bedroom.
#3 – Replace your furnace air filter regularly. Every 3-6 months. If you are able to step up the size of your filter from 1″ to 4″ you can improve the air flow and life of your filter. These cost about $18-25 each. They are cheaper to buy online and in bulk. But I will also add that a clean furnace filter actually saves you money in operating your furnace, and I would guess the net cost of two new filters every year is close to zero!
