Fungi result in intriguing mushrooms of various shapes and color! I was in an older house a few weeks back and came across something that reminded me of my junior high school years of playing Super Mario Brothers, a perfectly formed mushroom. The black plastic that covers the crawlspace floor helps reduce the moisture in the crawlspace and is called the vapor barrier. It reduces the likelihood of organic growth including mushroom fungus like the one pictured here. Notice that the vapor barrier is missing in this location. When I see mushrooms and other growth on the dirt, I note conducive conditions that can lead to organic growth on the wood structural components and other wood destroying organisms.
