I return to the creative ways that I have seen people update and maintain their houses. With the resources of Google and Youtube it is hard to understand how do-it-yourselfers can get things so wrong. So without further adieu, here are some recent ideas for those of you looking to do a job twice!
Designer Window Trim
There are few options in the hardware aisle for those looking for exterior window trim. However, if you wheel that squeaky cart over to the aisle with all of the elaborately designed interior trim, you might find just what you are looking for! Keep quiet about your plans though or the sales person might tell you that MDF is like cardboard and will do very poorly outside. I found a house that shows how well MDF holds up when used as designer window trim!
Electrical Water Feature
Look closely at this picture… the gutter extension runs over the top of the electrical meter to the house. Nothing seems to have happened yet but I’m sure it will make for beautiful electrical arcs of color with the right circumstances. It was much easier to run the gutter extension over the box than below and around the conduit. Easier is always better and cheaper, right? This do-it-yourself design combines water with electricity! EXCITING! I will be watching this from a safe distance during the next Seattle rain storm!
Retro Shower Head
With the constant pursuit of water-saving shower heads, I have appreciate the throwback efforts in a couple of recent home inspections. Why spend the money on a new expensive fixture when you can just unscrew the head and enjoy a steady, high volume shower! This eastern Washington country look makes a statement that will not soon be forgotten. Transform your personal shower into an amateur car wash!
