Few people would ever consider it safe to remove an electrical panel. It is why home inspectors and electricians have their jobs! This story may further discourage anyone from opening a panel…
I had one of my top 5 scariest moments at an inspection this summer as I re-installed a panel cover. As I removed the screws and cover I did not notice that the original panel screws had been replaced with wood screws. They had wide thread with a sharp, self-tapping tip. I snapped the pictures I needed of the interior and replaced the cover. I hand-started them initially but as I used my small cordless screwdriver there was a sudden thundering pop like a shotgun. Needless to say I jumped back scared out of my wits! After taking some time to collect and calm myself I was able to look back over the scene and pictures I had taken. After figuring out what happened and turning off the effected breaker I was able to confirm the problem. One of the screws had pierced the insulation of a 100-amp wire and the end literally disintegrated. Things could have been much worse.
If you notice a missing screw on your electrical panel cover, please (PLEASE!) use the right type of screw to replace it. You should never use wood screws. Consult an electrician or, do-it-yourselfers, stop by an electrical supply shop to find the appropriate screws for your panel type. Before screws are installed be sure they will not strike any obstructions. Learn from this home inspector who had to be reminded in a heart-stopping way!
