• Not the best storage idea

attic1_storage (1)Like gold fish we grow as big as our aquarium. As our milk crates are upgraded to real chairs and head boards get added to beds and Christmas ornaments fill totes needing  year round storage our houses fill up with stuff! Closets are soon not enough and garages brim to the safety sensor on the automatic door opener. Soon attics are finding cardboard boxes, baskets and odd shaped treasures. What was once a quiet home for cobwebs becomes the time capsule for old Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges, empty suitcases, and doll houses.

attic_fanWhen items are stored in the attic this obstructs the ventilation system installed with the roofing system. Gable end louvers, soffit and ridge and roof vents are unable to vent. Moisture levels can increase in the attic area. The darkening of the roof sheeting is a warning that moisture levels are too high and this will likely grow organic growth and possible molds if not remedied. My advice is to minimize any attic storage. Keep it in the middle of the attic area away from the soffits and low in height. Never allow it to contact the roof which will surely cut off the air flow. If storage is in the attic ensure an adequate ventilation system is present. This may include a powered attic fan to aid in the removal of moisture. Furthermore, it is advised to research the ability of your attic to carry the weight of a storage load.
