Homes built in the last twenty years began to install fascia boards that extended past gutters. This shortened gutters resulting in annoying drips at the ends of these boards. It looks beautiful until the rain water causes the ends to discolor or green algae-like materials to grow on the boards. Even worse is when the boards decay due to rot fungus and they never look like new again. Their deterioration is not a structural concern but it is an obvious aesthetic issue.
At a recent home inspection I found a brand new roof with some clever flashing installed by the contractor. I was impressed at his foresight and effort to prolong the life of these boards. Most roofers simply install a portion of roofing material as a tab over the fascia end. Better efforts include metal flashing over the board top to channel water away. This picture was the best effort I’ve seen so far. My client will most likely not have to re-paint the fascia boards early but can enjoy the clean lines of modern architecture for years to come.
