• Have you ever found crawlspace treasures?

This is a question I am frequently asked or the variation, “Have you found any bodies?” Nope. Y’all have watched too movies. But if I ever find one there’s bound to be another movie made about it!

No cash stashes or valuable treasures. But here are some of the things I have found…

Old-style pop cans sometimes show up. They are always empty. One of the cans had the Max character that marketed New Coke.

Speaking of beverages, once there was an 30-year old bottle of wine I found between the floor joists. I left it there and told my client about it hoping he would invite back to sample it. Not sure what ever happened with it. But I’ve still got the address and picture of where it was located!

Several years ago I came across yellowed-newspaper that was used to wrap heating ductwork in the attic. Fragments were lying on the attic floor and I picked up an article from the 1960s Seattle Times talking about the new 747 program and how big and far the new aircraft could fly. Recently I came across a box of old newspapers that included headlines from the 1940s.

Attics sometimes have interesting items stashed away. In a recent home inspection I found a vintage Erector set and Chemcraft kit. It was a metal laboratory case filled with powders and dried out chemicals. It made me a little nervous to think of what kids might do with that nowadays!

And of course there are the many other less pleasant items that I have found that makes home inspections one of the dirty jobs!
