One of the first tools my dad taught to use was a volt meter. I remember him giving me one of his old analog meters to add to my tool set. The two lead wires were red and black with sharp metal probes. These probes were to stick in those slots I was taught as a child to never stick paper clips. To this day I have a funny feeling inserting metal rods into an outlet to test it. On top of that, volt meters are hard to read and understand – AC or DC, 12, 120 or 240, alternating, direct current – and why is the Lululemon logo on the dial?
There’s something better I discovered when I started inspecting homes. And its another of my favorite products! I use at home frequently.
An outlet tester. You simple plug this into an outlet just as you would a regular electrical cord for a computer or lamp. The LED display tells you if the outlet is working or not. It can even tell you what’s wrong with the outlet if you need to know. Trying to figure out which outlet is controlled by that front room or bedroom switch? Trying to figure out what circuit breaker turns off your hallway outlet? Want to have the same high tech equipment as your home inspector? This is your safe, cheap, and easy answer. On top of that it is small enough to store in your kitchen junk drawer. You’ll spend $10 or less at any hardware store.
