As my inspections conclude I take time to download and label all my pictures so that I can remember and keep straight what I’m looking at. Sometimes I will take a picture and 90 minutes later it becomes a mystery household component that I struggle to identify. This picture is one that I thought some might find interesting. Can you name this mystery household component?
In a recent home inspection I came across this interesting steel cylinder in a closet floor where the furnace was located.
(I’m giving you clues as I describe it!)
The tube was filled with concrete and seemed to sink below the floor.
(The answer is down below if you need to skip ahead.)
Sitting next to the furnace is the hot water tank and main water shutoff.
(Any guesses?)
Outside of the furnace closet is a large rec room the family now enjoys after a recent remodel.
(What do you think?)
ANSWER: It is a steel bollard originally installed on the garage floor to protect the furnace when cars pulled in. The garage was converted to a rec room and the floor raised to match the rest of the house – the bollard was incorporated into the remodel and makes an interesting conversation (or blog) piece!
