I’ve looked into a lot of refrigerators over the years and given a cursory look at the controls. One stood out to me recently that I don’t ever remember seeing before… “Sabbath Mode.” From my reading of the Bible I’m familiar with the ancient Jewish practice of the Sabbath day; this was the seventh day of the week when Yahweh’s people would cease from their preparatory work and celebrate his rule.
Couldn’t we all use a setting like this that could be pushed each week?
Its not easy, I know. I have the same bent like so many to get just a little bit more done. Days off so easily become catch up days; catch up days are simply work days that we don’t get paid for! Ever feel like you need a weekend for your weekend?
Here’s a practice that has done my family well. Find a 24 hour period every week to slow down, enjoy one another, celebrate the relationships we have, and give some thought to the greater themes of life (the spiritual stuff!). Just as the six other days are preparatory for the day of Sabbath-ceasing, this life is preparatory for when we will cease from our laboring and enjoy Sabbath Mode as God designed it.
